Muhtasari
MaelezoAncala africana Tabanidae.jpg
English: Ancala africana, Tabanidae, is an African species of large horsefly, about 20 mm long. Females such as this one are blood-sucking, and, like some other large Tabanidae, they are reported to attack Hippos for preference.
Found at False Bay, Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa. 9 Nov 14. Specimen flew into a vehicle and apparently attacked the plastic leatherette on the inside of the tailgate. This behaviour has been observed independently before, so it is speculated that it reflects the species' habit of attacking pachyderms such as hippo. The photograph was taken by the lepidopterist Steve Woodhall, who kindly supplied this picture and most of the associated information.
