This is a composite of three images taken with different exposures. This is necessary, because the corona is much brighter close to the sun and would loose details on a photo that shows the outer corona. The tiny white spot to the lower left is Regulus (α Leonis), the brightest star in the constellation of Leo, where the sun was located on August 21.

During a total eclipse, the sunlight reflected from earth shines on the dark side of the moon and indeed one can see some vague features of the moon's surface.

The solar corona can only be seen during a total eclipse – it is a rare and mesmerizing sight. It consists of thin plasma that is very hot (one to three million degrees Celsius) and is shaped by the twisted magnetic field of the sun.
