Maneno saba katika Ukristo ni yale ambayo Yesu aliyatamka akiwa msalabani na yamerekodiwa katika Injili nne.[1][2]

Kati yake, matatu yanapatikana katika Injili ya Luka tu, mawili katika Injili ya Yohane tu. Lingine linapatikana katika Injili ya Mathayo na Injili ya Marko vilevile. Lingine tena limerekodiwa na Yohane lakini Mathayo na Marko wamelidokeza.[3]
Katika Mathayo na Marko, Yesu Kristo anamlilia Mungu. Katika Luka, yeye anawasamehe wauaji wake, anamfariki mhalifu aliyetubu, na kumkabidhi Baba roho yake. Katika Yohane, Yesu anasema na mama yake na mwanafunzi mpendwa, anatokeza kiu yake, na kutangaza utimilifu wa kazi na maisha yake yote kadiri ya mpango wa Mungu[4].
Maneno ya buriani ya mtu yeyote yanatiwa maanani sana. Yanaweza kusaidia kuelewa nini ilikuwa muhimu kwake. Ilikuwa hivyo hasa kwa Yesu[5] aliyeweza kusema machache tu kutokana na hali yake.[6]
Tangu karne ya 16 maneno hayo yametumika sana katika mahubiri ya madhehebu mbalimbali siku ya Ijumaa kuu[7][8], na vitabu vingi vimetungwa kuyafafanua.[9][10]

Interestingly, the Methodist Book of Worship adopted by the General Conference of 1964 presented two services for Good Friday: a Three Hours' Service for the afternoon and a Good Friday evening service that includes the "Adoration at the Cross" (the Gospel, Deprecations, and Adoration of the Cross) but omits a communion service, which would be the Methodist equivalent of the Mass of the Presanctified.

The 'Three Hours' Devotion, borrowed from Roman usage, with meditation on the 'seven last words' from the Cross, and held from 12 till 3, when our Lord hung on the Cross, is a service of Good Friday that meets with increasing acceptance among the Anglicans.
