T Cells
Hi I started to translate. I stopped at the part how to participate. As far as I can see the advice to use the search function which is proposed is useless. What should that be good for? Is there not a better idea how to send people to identify topics which need images?
And else just a comment: I like the idea of what you propose. I think, however, it would be far better to stop useless competitions which are not focused on WP content. I have followed so far Wiki loves Africa, which is producing tons of useless stuff. That is because it is basically produced by photographers who like to make nice pics, and not rarely also see an opportunity to promote themselves a bit. These motivations hardly have any connection to what wikipedia needs. If the aim is to build Africa-related content on wikipedia (and that brings readers, as I easily see from my frequent observation of swwiki data). Of course as the foundation is subsidizing these competetions there is a selfmade crowd of people who have been involved and congratulated each other about how great it is what everybody is doing. Not easy to break a useless habit. Kipala (majadiliano) 10:35, 19 Aprili 2020 (UTC)
- Hello User:Kipala thanks for the translation. I, however, agree with you that there is no point organizing a photo contest that would not improve Wikipedia. I am active on the African mailing list and I remember that we have both raised a concerns that these images collected from WLA are not been used on Wikipedia article. But can't stop people from organising photography contests but we can devise a means to ensure that the images they collected are useful. WPWP does not involve taking photograph but using photographs already collected to improve Wikipedia articles. The "advise to use the search function" may not be too good. We can replace it with a more efficient method. We have a long list of tools to help people to identify topics which need images here. We are still working on some tools as well. Your concerns about that "search function" is acknowledged. Thanks for you help. T Cells (majadiliano) 11:09, 19 Aprili 2020 (UTC)
