Welcome to Kiswahili Wikipedia!

We welcome you even if you don't speak Kiswahili. For a bot flag go to this site. If you try to edit entries as a non-speaker, it is better to first communicate with one of our admins who can advise you. You may find them at Wikipedia:Wakabidhi. And, please:

  • do not post computer translated texts (like Google Translate, Content Translation, etc. all do not work for Swahili)
  • nor copied texts/images from other webs to this site!
  • do not use links to commercial pages, never post anything that looks like advertising.
  • do not use as references <ref>Wikipedia (or another project of Wikimedia)</ref>, though you can use their references by writing them themselves.

As a newcomer we advise that you register your email. This will not be visible to others but it allows us to notify you, which often is helpful in case of problems.

WikiCup

hariri

Hi SJ --

I saw your post over on the English Wiki talk page for the WikiCup and decided to come over here and offer some assistance. Though this will be my first year at WikiCup, I've been active at the WikiProject Aviation Contest, which I understand is based on the WikiCup format (though it focuses more on actual content than moderated content.) I'd be happy to do pretty much everything except translation (I took half a semester of Swahili in college freshman year and remember next to nothing, but I've borrowed some Rosetta Stone software which should get me up to passing soon enough.)

Grand! You'll find that the fabulous admin who welcomed you is brushing up on his Swahili here, and I am farther behind than you -- I spent a few months in Kenya and Tanzania a decade ago and have lost most of what conversational Swahili I knew...
Yes, this model is lightly similar to the wikicup -- in that people submit a list of their work, and it is ranked according to quality. Our immediate needs are simple:
  1. learn how WP:KWC is supposed to work. Bear in mind that most participants are total wiki newbies, and may get frustrated easily
    • figure out the common failure modes : two people translating the same article, overwriting one another's work. a judge not understanding how to use the simple judging templates. a contestant submitting their work on the wrong place / in the wrong format
  2. welcome anyone who hasn't been welcomed. Point them to the KWC discussion page if they are lost
  3. help direct attention to problems that arise. (being able to refresh RC, find someone online, and connect them to someone in need is often the most valuable thing anyone can do :)
At some point there may also be more to be done re: helping judges understand how to read a history page and figure out who really wrote what. Cheers, Sj (majadiliano) 23:31, 8 Desemba 2009 (UTC)Reply
