Historia ya elimu ilianza miaka mingi kwa kuwa elimu kama sayansi haiwezi kutengwa na utamaduni wowote wa elimu iliyokuwepo awali. Wakubwa waliwafunza wadogo wao juu ya jamii kwa kutumia maarifa na ujuzi waliohitaji kufahamu na mwishowe kupitisha.

Mabadiliko ya utamaduni na binadamu kama spishi yalitegemea mazoea ya kupitisha elimu. Katika jamii ambazo hazikujua kusoma, hili liliafikiwa kupitia mdomo na kuiga. Kusimuliana hadithi kuliendelezwa kutoka kizazi kimoja hadi kingine.

Lugha ya mazungumzo iliendelea na kuwa ishara na herufi. Kina na upana wa elimu au maarifa ulioweza kuhifadhiwa na kupitishwa uliongezeka zaidi na zaidi. Wakati ambapo tamaduni zilianza kupanua elimu zaidi ya ujuzi wa kawaida wa mawasiliano, biashara, ukusanyaji chakula, tunu na desturi za kidini na kadhalika, mwishowe elimu rasmi na masomo vilifuatia. Kisomo kwa maana hii kilikuwa kimeshaanza nchini Misri kati ya 3000 na 500 KK.

Siku hizi aina fulani ya elimu ni jambo la lazima kwa watu wote katika nchi nyingi. Kwa sababu ya ongezeko la watu na kuenea kwa elimu ya lazima, Shirika la Elimu, Sayansi na Utamaduni la Umoja wa Mataifa (UNESCO) limepiga hesabu ya kwamba miaka 30 ijayo, watu wengi zaidi ulimwenguni watapata elimu rasmi katika historia ya binadamu.[1]
